These are the Six Speeches

Required to Become a Level II* Public Speaker

1) The “Ice Breaker”

The “Ice Breaker” involves speaking for 3-5 minutes on a subject of your choice. It can be like show and tell, it can be written out, it can be off the top of your heads. As much or as little preparation as you want. Original material is preferred, but reading someone else’s work is permitted.

We use a signaling system to let you know your time, so you'll know when your time is running out.

More detailed information on the following speeches are available in the “Files” area of our group site.

2. Getting to Know You - 4 to 6 minutes

Getting over nervousness by telling the club about yourself.

3. Using Gestures - 5 to 7 minutes

This project calls on you to work with gestures and body language during your speech.

4. Vocal Variety - 5 to 7 minutes

Use volume, pitch, rate, and quality as well as appropriate pauses to reflect and add meaning and interest to your message. Your voice should reflect the thoughts you are presenting.

5. Get Comfortable with Visual Aids - 5 to 7 minutes

Use visual aids to help the audience understand and remember what they hear. The most popular visual aids are computer-based visuals, overhead transparencies, flip charts, whiteboards, and props. Try to avoid passing around materials.

6. Speak With Knowledge - 7 minutes, plus or minus 30 seconds

Research a topic or issue, write a speech, and then *read* that speech to the audience (as opposed to using notecards or notes or whatever you used for the previous speeches)... and have it well-rehearsed, so it doesn't run long or end too soon.

Other:

Speaker’s Choice – Between 3 and 10 minutes

The speaker chooses the topic and emphasis.
